Because of the tireless efforts and determination of our founders, Lambda Chi Alpha was chartered at the University of Delaware on December 4th, 1965. In the fifty years that have followed, Lambda Chi Alpha has developed a rich and unique history.

Today, Lambda Chi remains the oldest chapter on campus consistently recognized by the University of Delaware, making Lambda Chi also one of the school's the oldest student organizations. Our chapter's longevity is a direct result of time-honored traditions of excellence in areas of philanthropy, academics, and campus engagement. Our active undergraduate brothers proudly carry on those traditions so that Lambda Chi's next fifty years might be even stronger and richer than the last.

My experience at Lambda Chi Alpha was 100% positive and greatly contributed to my experience at U.of Delaware.  I joined 2nd semester Freshman year and discovered that a lifetime of friendships and support awaited me.  To be part of a larger, unified group of young men helped and the activities of the Fraternity provided an important larger purpose to the college years outside of pure academic pursuit.  By my Senior year I experienced an interesting transformation from the new freshman to the seasoned Senior who was in position to help the newer members become active participants in the fraternity and the community.  And yes, I graduated in 4 years along with my roommates Steve Twelves (Chemical Engineering) and Jackson Kenneth Reid (Mechanical Engineering) all the while having a great time and making lifetime friends.  - Kenneth Neugebauer, BS ’78, Lambda Beta 196, Chemical Engineering, Business Director, Solvay Fluorides, LLC, Houston, TX 

The education I received at the University of Delaware contributed greatly to the person I have become – in my family, in my profession, and in my community.  My undergraduate experience extended well beyond the classroom, and a majority of my out-of-classroom education is the result of being a Lambda Chi Alpha brother.

It is easy, in retrospect, to recognize the profound impact Lambda Chi Alpha has had on my life.  It would be a blatant lie to say these are the same reasons I decided to join a fraternity as an 18-year-old freshman.  At that age I was looking at the present and how a fraternity would impact my college years.  The impetus to consider fraternity membership was largely social.  I attended the Rush events and talked with the brothers.  They were different; they accepted me from the beginning and stressed the “Associate Membership” concept of Lambda Chi Alpha – that if I was offered and accepted an invitation to join, I would be treated as an equal, and would be prepared for full membership toward the latter part of the semester.  They urged me to look beyond college and understand that Lambda Chi Alpha is for life.  They introduced me to alumni who were able to solidify this concept for me.  I could not have felt more comfortable.  A fraternity and its members can tell you many things during the recruitment process, yet never follow through after you have committed to become a member.  This is not the practice at Lambda Chi Alpha – the integrity and honesty offered to me during recruitment holds true to this day.

Lambda Chi Alpha IS for life.  I have many lifelong friends from my college years and look forward to the good times we continue to share.  Whenever I meet a Lambda Chi Alpha brother from another chapter, it is clear that we share a unique bond that will never be broken.  I am honored to be a Lambda Chi Alpha brother and am proud of the men who continue to use the lessons and principles on which the fraternity was founded to grow and improve the local chapter at the University of Delaware. – Lew DeAngelis, BA ’88, Lambda Beta 406, Senior Practice Consultant, EMC Corporation 

Its been said many times that the path your life takes is largely predicated upon the quality of the decisions you make along the way.  Choosing the right fraternity is no different.  Simply put, the choice to associate with Lambda Chi Alpha was one of the best decisions of my life.  During the early to mid 1980′s at Delaware, the Greek system was in its heyday and as such it would have been very easy to become associated with a number of fraternities on campus, but in attending rush at Lambda Chi, the experience was different – the positive impression that I got from meeting the brotherhood was a very strong one.   I was treated as an equal from the very start, which to me was of the utmost importance in helping forming true bonds of brotherhood and friendship.  You want your brothers to be the type of guys you feel like you can run through a brick wall with, and that’s exactly what I got with Lambda Chi Alpha.  Of course, college isnt all about academics – and for me, being a Lambda Chi Alpha brother brought with it 3 years of the obvious social advantages - but most importantly, long after my college years passed and time and distance inevitably separated people, I knew I still always had those friendships formed at Lambda Chi, and even after almost 25 years since graduation, many still exist today.  The truth is that most of my best friends are brothers, many whom I still see and communicate with on a regular basis.  There is not a doubt in my mind that my experiences as a Lambda Chi Alpha brother were 100% positive and have helped me become the person I am today, both socially and professionally.  When I associated all those years ago, I remember brothers telling me that a selling point was that “Lambda Chi is for life” – well, having lived it myself now, I can honestly say that its not just saying, its a fact. – Karl “Hammer” Janetka, BS ’87, Lambda Beta 422, Director of Civil Engineering and Land Development, Van Cleef Engineering Associates

Lambda Chi Alpha was a key part of my transition from a young adult to adulthood.  From the leadership opportunities it provided both internally and in the community to the network of older brothers that helped you learn everything from navigating the campus, choosing the best professors, and finding a job after graduation, Lambda Chi Alpha helped me mature and prepared me for the “real world.”  A true testament to the friendships created through the Lambda Chi Alpha experience is the fact that I still keep in touch (frequently) with over 20 brothers I attended school with from 1985-1989; not because they are in my profession (i.e. I have to), but because I want to.  Many people associate fraternities with “Mr. Blutarsky” (and his 0.0 grade point average).  Though you “choose your own adventure” in college, Lambda Chi provides the support to keep you off “Bluto’s path.”  Of the 20+ brothers I still stay in regular contact with, there are accountants, salesmen, network technicians, software developers, musicians, marketers, department heads for large companies, and entrepreneurs.  Hardly the career path that Bluto was on.  Anyone interested in making sure they compliment their book knowledge with a strong social network that provides the support and leadership opportunities needed to round out the resume and better prepare you to land a position out of college should strongly consider Lambda Chi Alpha.  I never regretted my choice.  -Mike D’Andrade, BS ’89, Lambda Beta 433, Senior Sales Executive, Financial Services Software  

I have always told the active brothers that I owe my livelihood to Lambda Chi Alpha.  I was a freshman and had stopped drinking since high school.  I wanted to join a fraternity, but was worried that they would force me to drink or do things I didn’t want to during ‘pledging’.  At a Greek Open House, I talked to many Fraternities.  The one that stood out was Lambda Chi Alpha.    Their Associate Member Program made sense to me.  Being treated like an equal, not some lowly pledge.  They didn’t care that I didn’t drink, in fact, it had nothing to do with what they were all about.  They were welcoming and sounded sincere, so I decided to Rush.  I can tell you that they lived up to all they preached and it changed my life forever. 

The Fraternity helped mold me  into the confident man that I am today.  My brothers are my friends for life, and getting to know the actives has reinforced that nothing has changed!  Go for it!  -Lyman Chen, BS ’93, Lambda-Beta 566, Film & Television Actor, SAG/AFTRA.

Life is full of difficult choices and not all of them are going to work out.  Life is not in the success or failure of those choices, it’s in the decision to make them, for whatever reasons you choose. 

I have made a lot of choices for which I am thankful.  One of them was joining Lambda Chi back in ’93.  Who knew that after all these years, I would still be so close to those who were in Lambda Chi with me at the University of Delaware.  13 or us are in a Fantasy Football league together and there are countless others who regularly attend poker games, baseball games, weddings, Baptisms, dinners, drinks, and every other possible occasion, just like we did in college. . .well not the baptisms, I guess.

So much of our journey in life is filled with new relationships, which are all amazing if you choose to see them that way, but it’s also nice to know that those relationships built so long ago continue to last on.  Enjoy the journey no matter what life hands you, embrace the differences between each other,  most of all: take chances and try, as hard as it can sometimes be, not to take life too seriously.. . . that’s what I learned at Lambda Chi.  – Brendan Hermes, BS ’95, Lambda Beta 645, Executive in Charge of Production, Worldwide Biggies

 My college education was Lambda Chi Alpha.  Sure, classes helped but what am I using today in my job in the Pharmaceutical industry?   Integrity, people skills and leadership I learned as a brother of LXA.  Professional success is one thing but lifelong friends you can count on for anything is what has impacted me the most as a young man who didn;t know what the hell he wanted to be when he grew-up.   I owe Lambda Chi for my personal, professional and relationship success.   Lambda Chi is different.  Its not your typical “Frat” its a brotherhood.   Every generation of brothers that pass through UD LXA have a common bond.  My wife was there in the late 80′s early 90′s and I was there through 96….she tells me that the brothers of LXA are all “good guys” and are true friends not frat brothers and pledges….brothers.    Joining LXA was the best decision I made as a young man and I would not be who I am today without that experience.    On a lighter note, I had the best time of my life as an active memeber and with the friends I made in LXA….the stories, the fun, the laughs will never leave me.  - Jay Merenda, Lambda Beta 652, BA ’96, Technology Leader AstraZeneca 

I remember thinking during my freshman year at Delaware: “Why should I join a fraternity?  I don’t need to pay so I can make friends.”  It is hard to imagine that if not for Phil McCluskey, LB650 dragging me along to RUSH with the promise of free food, I would not be the man I am today.  Looking back now, 18 years later, I realize that I owe so much to Phil and the family, friends and brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha at University of Delaware. 

It was only a month or so after I accepted my bid at LCA that I learned I would go on academic probation for my second semester.  I was right to think that I didn’t need to pay to make friends.  I found plenty of them my first semester.  I also found myself in plenty of trouble.  I was on the verge of being kicked out of school, but Lambda Chi helped put structure back in my life. 

LCA became my family away from home.  I needed that family to keep me on the straight and narrow.  If not for brothers like Erik Hoffacker, LB 586, Tony Petrolle, LB 611 or Pierric Senay, LB 640, I would not have become a brother. I may not have met some of the closest people in my life today and may not have achieved success professionally. I still believe that I don’t need to pay to make friends.  What I have learned is, like everything else in life, there is a cost for what belonging, sharing and brotherhood offers.  You get what you pay for in this world.
